Wizengamot Overview

The Wizengamot has two chambers: the House of Lords, and the House of Commons. Out of the two, the House of Lords is far more powerful.

The House of Lords

The House of Lords has seven appointed positions, and forty-one hereditary seats. The number of hereditary seats must be a prime number, and if one of the lines goes extinct, the House of Lords must convene to ascend a new member House.
Most Houses are patrilineal, and individuals must be seventeen to sit on the Wizengamot. Of the various House titles, Ancient is the most prestigious, followed by Noble, and Honorable. Houses may have more than one of these titles.
There are two hereditary seats that are not occupied by English or Welsh families: the MacMillans are the only Scottish clan to hold a seat, and the Morans are the only Irish coven to hold a seat.
In the list below, an asterix (*) indicates that the family is a member of the Sacred Twenty-Eight.
In terms of political power, the House of Lords can act as a check on any legislation the House of Commons wishes to pass. They can amend legislation, and delay legislation from passing. They can also introduce and vote on their own legislation.

House of Commons:

The House of Commons is an elected body, and debate in the House of Commons is moderated by the Chief Warlock. Representatives are assigned to regions based off population. In terms of political power, the House of Commons can introduce and vote on new legislation, and pass a no-confidence vote on the Minister of Magic.
